Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July 2009

The veterans\' regatta takes place the weekend after The Royal Henley Regatta. The veteran course is 1000 metres upstream on the Thames at The Upper Thames Rowing Club.

Our coxless four of Jon Garner, Andy Jones, Martin Jones and Russell Thornton were entered in Vet D and had a great regatta.

On Friday morning in their heat they were up against a City of Sheffield four who they beat by four lengths, returning a time of 3mins 29secs.

Then Friday afternoon they raced in the quarter final against Nottingham and repeated the result of the morning by crossing the finish line four lengths in front. Their time against Nottingham was 3mins 31secs.

They were in the semi final on Saturday. Their opponents this time were a crew from Norwich. Again our four crossed the line first, two and a half lengths ahead of Norwich. Their performance was consistent, with a time of 3mins 31secs - same as for the quarter final.

In the final they had close, hard battle with Walbrook. At the finish Walbrook were ahead by a third of a length with a time of 3mins 36secs.

A very good and encouraging result for our Vet D four, to win the first three rounds so convincingly and to lose the final by just a third of a length.

Henley regatta is held on 1st to 5th July but because of the large number of entries, qualifying races are held to reduce the number. We had two crews entered in the Wyfold Challenge Cup for coxless fours. Gloucester A consisted of Ben Rodford, Dan Brawn, Tim Barnett and Sam Thornton, and Gloucester B was Dave Pollard, Toby Venn, Mike Lacey and Russell Thornton.

The course is 2112 metres upstream on the Thames at Henley. Only fifteen of the forty six crews entered qualified to go on to the main regatta. Our A crew had a time of 7mins 18.osecs and the B crew returned a time of 7mins 28.2secs. The A crew failed to qualify by one to two seconds. So fame at Henley for our crews will have to wait for another year !!! Henley may be about show and tradition but, have no doubt, there is seriously good rowing there too.

Sunday 7th June 2009

Sarah Cook, Larissa Lowe and Steve Lowe entered the regatta. Here is Steve\'s report on the day

A good standard event at the dedicated rowing facility in Peterborough over the \'sprint\' distance of 500m

Steve Lowe started the day with the IM3 single. A storm brewed up for the race with driving wind and rain making conditions challenging. This along with the fact that there were no boats or bridges to bounce off meant that Lowe managed to cross out of his lane losing any hope of a challenge

In the next event the Double of Sarah Cook and Larissa Lowe sailed through their qualification heat but saw some very strong looking crews including one in a GB boat that set the stage for a good final

Steve in his second event of the day, the veterans single, again faced steering challenges this time with the marker buoys, losing any possibility of progressing to the next round

Larissa, despite one false start, won the Vet C/D handicap, comfortably making up the 5 second handicap in the first 100m stroking down to 20 strokes per minute for the last 200m

In the final event of the day for Gloucester the final of the Women\'s double IM1. The Gloucester crew went off hard with 3 crews in a line for the first 200m but were not strong enough to hold the position crossing the line in 3rd position

Sunday 7th June 2009

It was the second time Bell Boat races have been held at the club. Juniors under eleven raced in the first session from 10pm to 12 noon. Then 11 to 18 year olds from 12 to 2pm and the seniors from 2pm to 4pm. The weather was kind with just cloud and some sunshine until the final at the end of the day when it just poured down.

Youngsters from Tirlebrook Primary and Robinswood Primary made up the three teams in the first session- Titans from Tirlebrook ; Robins of Robinswood and the Put Togethers made up from the two schools. In the first race the Robins beat the Titans by one and a half lengths due mainly to the Titans running into the bank at one point. The Titans showed their potential in the second race easily beating Put Together by five lengths. In the third race Robins also got the bettter of Put Together but by only half a length.

A draw decided the entrants for the last two races of the session. Put Together drew a bye into the final while Robins and Titan had to battle together in the semi. With improved techniques by now both teams in the semi paddled well with Titans winning by one and a half lengths in a good race. The final too between Titans and Put Together was a good race. Titans again proved their class and won by one and a half lengths
.
Each member of the winning crew received a medal and all crew members had a bar of chocolate.

There were seven teams in the second session for the 11 to 18 year olds. They were Crossdressers; Inbetweeners; Blue Team; No 1 Team; Gladiators; Innsworth Scouts and Team Unknown. The first race was close. Inbetweeners beat Crossdressers by 3 feet. In the second race Blue Team beat No. 1 Team easily. The third race produced a win for Innsworth Scouts over Gladiators. Team Unknown had a bye to the next round. In the first semi final Blue Team beat Inbetweeners by three lengths. The other semi produced the closest race of the day, Team Unknnown beat Innsworth Scouts by just one foot.

To give the teams that lost in the first round another race, Crossdressers paddled against Gladiators and Crossdressers won by a length. Then Crossdressers competed with No. 1 Team with Crossdressers again coming out winners by two lengths. The final to decide the winners of the session then took place between Blue Team and Team Unkown. Blue Team came out clear winners to take the title for the session.

The adult\'s session had five teams ; 8 Plebs in a Boat; Team Shuttleworth; 46ers; Gloucester County Council and Rachael\'s Rowers.
The first race was won by 8 Plebs in a Boat who beat Team Shuttleworth by 3 lengths. Team Shuttleworth then had another race against Rachael\'s Rowers, who also beat them, but only by 2 feet. In the third race Gllucester County Council beat 46ers easily. 46ers second race was against Team Shuttleworth who beat them easily. The first semi final was between 8 Plebs in a Boat and Gloucester County Council who were beaten by 3 lengths. The other semi between Rachael\'s Rowers and Team Shuttleworth was won by Rachael\'s Rowers by 3 feet. The final, raced in a downpour, was between 8 Plebs in a Boat and Rachael\'s Rowers. 8 Plebs in a Boat came out champions of the session by 2 lengths

The day\'s event ran smoothly thanks to all the club helpers. The teams obviously enjoyed the races and the clubs coffers were enriched by the entry and refreshments money. Another successful Bell Boats event buiding on the first one held in 2008.

Jon Garner, Andy Jones, Martin Jones and Russell Thornton coxed by Rosie Jones raced in VetC.4+ and you can see a photograph of them winning the event in our Gallery.

We had another win in event IM3.4+ thanks to Dave Pollard, Toby Venn, Mike Lacey and Sam Thornton and their cox Rosie Jones. Their pic shows the calm composure of the crew.

Jon Garner and Russell Thornton gave us our third event win in IM2.2-. I think they frightened the opposition into submission - see the pic.

Martin and Gerri Jones raced in VetD.2x. but lost out to a double from Dart Totnes.

Steve Lowe was unable to gain a victory in either of his two events VetC.1x or IM3.1x but the Gallery has a fine photograph of him in action.

Gerri Jones was in WIM2.1x. Although she did not win her event it seems from her photo that she was laughing on the way to the finish. What do you think ?

Our Nv.4+ crew of Jon Phipps, Jon C, Harry Denne and Lee Godsell coxed by Sue Berry did well. They won their heat and the semi final but were beaten by a very polished crew in the final. There is a fine photograph of them on our Gallery page. It\'s really worth looking in the Gallery.

Johnathan and Russel were up against a pair from Minerva Bath in the semi final and Gloucester won by two feet. Then our two crews competed against each other in the final when Martin and Andy came out victors by three lengths.

Steve Lowe entered a sculling event again, VetC.1x. He had a good race but was two lengths behind the Hollowel Scullers boat at the finish line.

David Pollard and Sam Thornton brought some glory to Gloucester in the J18.2x event. In the semi final they easily beat a double from Plymouth then showed a Wycliffe College double the way to the finish line beating them by two lengths.

David and Sam were joined by Mike Lacey and Toby Venn and cox Rosie Jones in IM3.4+ to compete in a semi final against a Bristol Ariel four. This was not to be another victory for Gloucester but it was close, just a third of a length in it at the line.

The established Gloucester four of Jonathan Garner, Andy Jones, Martin Jones and Russell Thornton in Sen.4- competed with a Monkton Combe School crew who lead Gloucester by five lengths at the finish.

We had a crew in Nov.4+ which consisted of Jonothan Phipps, John Denne, Lee Godsell and Tim Cooper coxed by Sue Berry. They came out second best to a four from Monkton Combe School by three and a half lengths.

In his second sculling event of the day Steve Lowe entered IM3.1x and met a Bath University sculler in the semi final. Steve was beaten by the Bath boat which went on to win the final.

Paul Brooker, Mark Venn, Toby Venn and Mike Lacey coxed by Rosie Jones had a good battle with a crew from Minerva Bath in the straight final of event IM2.4+. At the finish line our crew were just a canvas behind Bath.

But we had revenge against Bath University in event W.Sen.2x. We were represented by Larissa Lowe and Kalan Mai Waite. Again it was a good race but Gloucester crossed the finish a length ahead of Bath.

The regatta is held on the six/seven lane 2000 metres course at Dorney Lake, the venue of the 2012 Olympic rowing. The weather was fine but a strong crosswind made the water choppy in the higher number lanes. We had five crews entered in this prestigious regatta, competing amongst some of the best crews in the country.

Two of the crews were juniors. Our WJ15A.4x+ crew was Laura Meadows, Hattie Neave, Lauren Williams, Alicia Green with cox Patrick Pollard, and our J18A.4x- consisted of Sam Thornton, Ben Marshall, Lyndon Cook and Dave Pollard. The senior crews were: Russell Thornton in IM2.1x; Ben Rodford, Dan Braun, Tim Barnett and Rich Woods in IM1.4-, and Toby Venn, Dave Pollard, Sam Thornton and Mike Lacey in IM1.4+

The WJ15A.4x+ crew began their day with an excellent row in their heat, to win it with a time of 7mins 52secs. In the final they again did very well to take fourth place with a time of 7mins 48secs.

Russell had a hard race in heat A of his IM2.1x event and came in fifth of the six contestants with a time of 7mins 55secs compared with the winner\'s time of 7mins 24secs.

Our crew racing in IM1.4+ should have been in IM3, but that category was full. However they put in a good performance and came sixth of the seven boats that were in the final. Our crew produced a time of 6mins 56secs to beat their local rivals Ross and they were just two seconds behind London who were in fifth place.

Our IM1.4- crew also found they had tough competition in heat C of their event but secured fourth place out of the six entrants with a time of 6mins 36secs against the winner\'s time of 6mins 24secs.

All our crews had a good day\'s racing although they found it tough against the quality crews at Wallingford, but all gained good experience, particularly our juniors.

They achieved a time of 17mins 2secs and came second to Loughborough. Tobie Bowdler and Nicholas Waters time was 17mins 5secs in J15 2X to take second place. Alicia Green and Hattie Neave had an excellent performance in WJ13 2X to win the event in a new record time of 17mins 21secs. The WS3 4+ event was won by Rachael Britnell, Janet Godsell, Eleanor Cooper and Karern Longstaff coxed by Pete Hills in a time of 17mins 27secs. Ben Marshall again showed his capability to win his event, J16 1X with a time of 17mins 33secs. Alistair Yates and Thomas Waters in J18 2X finished in 17mins 56secs. The established pair of John Squire and James Dorer in VetE 2X, won their event in 18mins 17secs. Our women\'s novice crew consisting of Abigail Cooper, Lwando Squire, Verna Green and Janet Phipps coxed by Deirdre Squire in WNV 4+ finished in 21mins 4secs.

We had five crews sculling for Gloucester on the short course in division 2. In J13 4X+ Lucy Hailes, Samantha Staite, John Helsby, Noah Serafin coxed by Laura Meadows won the event with a time of 11mins 47secs. Also sculling in WJ13 4X+ Alena Antonijovic, India Parsons, Ben Rolfe, James Bird coxed by Jessica Sharples finished in 11mins 49secs to take second place. Freddie Wise sculling in J13 1X took first place with a time of 12mins 56secs while Rory Green came a very close second, in a time of 12mins 57secs. Patch Pollard was not far behind to take third place in a time of 13mins 3secs.

The number of senior and junior events won by the clubs were Evesham RC 3 senior 5 junior; Bristol City RC 2 senior; West of England University 4 senior; Avon and Somerset Police 1 senior; Hereford RC 2 senior; Bristol Ariel 4 senior; Dart Totnes 5 senior; Pengwern RC 3 senior; Ross RC 6 junior; Warwick RC 3 senior; Gloucester RC 3 senior 4 junior; Bewdley RC 1 senior; Loughborough BC 1 senior; Stourport BC 1 senior.

Inspite of poor weather the Head was again a great success, with all the crews enjoying some good racing. The organisation worked well with umpires, marshals and time keepers and helpers all doing their jobs efficiently. Fortunately, the rescue boats had nothing to do, while those preparing and serving the food in the clubhouse had a busy day.

The course is 6 km downstream. We had three crews entered in the Head. Our S2 4- crew was Ben Rodford; Dan Braun; Tim Barnett and Rich Woods. The VETD 4- crew consisted of Jon Garner; Andy Jones; Martin Jones and Russell Thornton. The third crew was entered in J18 4X and was made up of Ben Marshal; Dave Pollard; Sam Thornton and Lyndon Cook.

However all three crews were put into S2 4- with Toby Venn replacing Ben Marshal from the J18 Crew. Gloucester produced an excellent result. Ben Rodford\'s crew won the event with a time of 18mins 54 secs. Lyndon Cook\'s crew did exceptionally well to take second place with a time of 19mins 36secs. To round things off our Vet D crew made it a clean sweep to take third place with a time of 19mins 58secs.

All three of our crews beat the local Worcester S2 4- crew which came in fourth place with a time of 20mins 9secs.

The 55th Scullers Head organised by Vesta Rowing Club takes place on the four and a quarter miles, championship course on the Tideway, from Mortlake to Putney. First sculled in 1954, it is the largest single division single sculls race in the world and attracts entries from all over the United Kingdom and the world, with standards ranging from internationals to novices.

We had four entrants amongst the nearly 500 boats in the Head. They were Ben Rodford, Beth Rodford, Russel Thornton and Sam Thornton.

Ben was sculling in event S3 LWT. He completed the course in 21mins 53secs to take sixth place in the field of fourteen. The event winner was just 18 secs quicker than Ben.

Beth was in the women\'s elite event , WE, with seven other contenders. She took second place with a time of 22mins 20secs, being 8 seconds behind the winner.

Russell\'s event was Vet D. In the field of 19 boats Russell was eighth. He had a time of 23mins 16secs compared with the winning time of 22mins 3secs.

Sam had twenty five competitors in his event, J18. He finished in seventeenth position with a time of 22mins 37secs. The winner\'s time was 21mins 22secs.

All our entrants did very well amongst such high quality competition in this prestigiuos head of river. To see Beth Rodford sculling in Gloucester colours brings pride to the club.

I\'d like to thank and congratulate all who took part in the two Evesham heads and secured the Victor Ludorum for the club. It was a tremendous effort by all and really impressive to see the size and breadth of the club\'s entries. It was also good to note the strong sense of club achievement during the prize giving after the event. It was a close run contest right to the end, and was only secured by the addition of two course records.

I\'d like to think that the club can move forward with the realsiation of what we can achieve when we make the effort. I look forward to continued success in the head season, and some impressive results across the squads as we move into the regattas.

Thanks,

Russell Thornton

Gloucester Rowing Club win Victor Ludorum Prize

The great, concerted effort made by Gloucester at Evesham Head, building on the points already gained by our juniors at Evesham Junior Head in October, brought home the Victor Ludorum prize of six sections of Connect-a-Dock floating staging, 30 feet long in total. The prize was accompanied by an engraved silver cup. The competion was very close, with Stoke / Trentham club winning the same number of events as Gloucester, but Gloucester won the prize because we broke two more course records than Stoke / Trentham. Gloucester scored 26 points (8 of which came from the Junior\'s head) to Stoke\'s 24 with Evesham Rowing Club gaining 22 points.

We had eighteen crews racing in the two divisions, including a very strong contingent of juniors again. Many of our crews brought home one of the specially commissioned medals, for winning their event. There were 98 crews in division one in the morning and 76 crews in division two in the afternoon. The Head was run over a 4000 metre course up stream on the Avon, finishing near the club house. The forecast fog came to little but the weather was very cold and damp, particularly for divisioin one.

Pride of place must go to our J18 crew David Pollard, Lyndon Cook, Haydon Sansom and Sam Thornton racing in event S3 4x- They were the first crew to cross the finish line, winning their event with a time of 15min 39 secs - the quickest boat of the day.

Our S2 2- crew of Rich Woods, Tim Barnett, Daniel Brawn and Ben Rodford won their event and set up a new course record for S2 2-with a time of 15mins 59secs.

Jon Garner, Toby Venn, Martin Jones, and Russell Thornton with Edward Jones as cox in S3 4+ had a time of 17min 7secs and came second to a Stratford crew in their event.

Tim Barnett and Rich Woods won their S2 2- event with a time of 17mins 32secs.

In event S4 4+ Andy Jones, Toby Venn, Paul Brooker and Daniel Brawn coxed by Edward Jones had a time of 17mins 39secs and won their category.

Lyndon Cook and Dave Pollard won event J18 2x with a time of 17mins 39secs.

Event N1x was won by Ben Rodford in 18mins 26secs. (Incidentally the same time as a WS3 4x- crew from Bristol. )

Our WJ15 4x put up a great show winning in 18mins 30secs and setting a new course record in their event. The winning crew was Alicia Green, Hattie Neave, Lauren Williams and Laura Meadows.

In event S3 2- Jon Garner and Russell Thornton came second with a time of 18mins 52secs.

Martin and Gerry Jones rowed in VD2x and won the event in 18mins 54secs.

Sam Thornton won event J18 1x with a time of 19mins 1sec, over a minute ahead of his nearest rival.

Larissa Lowe and Sarah Cook made it another win for Gloucester in WS2 2x with a time of twenty minutes exactly.

Our faithful WS3 4+ crew of Zoe Mandeville, Rachael Britnell, Karen Longstaff and Kim Drinkwater coxed by Pete Hills came in third in their event in 20mins 4secs.

Ben Marshall raced in J16 1x and won his event returning a time of 20mins 10secs gaining another medal for Gloucester.

James Dorer and John Squire raced in VE 2- and broke the previous record for the event with a time of 21mins 33secs but were beaten to first place by an even better crew from Nottingham who had a time of 20mins 32secs.

Sarah Cook raced in WS2 1x. Sarah\'s time of 21mins 54secs gave her second place.

We had two entrants in WJ15 1x Lauren Williams and Georgie Lowe. Lauren came second in the event with a time of 21mins 59secs and Georgie came fourth in 23mins 43 secs. A great effort by these two girls, battling up stream in singles on a raw morning.

The concerted effort of the members that won the Victor Ludorum at Evesham has shown the talent, strength, and dedication within Gloucester Rowing Club. It bodes well for the future.

The club won the victor ludorum at the Evesham Senior Head following its successes at the Junior Head, eighteen crews were entered, eleven wins were recorded and 3 records fell to club crews.

Here is the view from the 2 seat of the S2 4-:

Having sat for an hour and a half at the front of the first division, the mens S2 4- started at half/three quarter pressure to warm up, rating 33. A stable platform and sharp blade work enabled the crew to lengthen out and lay down some beans. Rich Woods steered a beautiful course which included dodging the University of Birmingham coxless four who were reversing out of a bush. Rich put in a gently worded request for them to keep out of the way while a combination of extra beef from bowside and great steering got the boat through the S-bends at full speed.

They then caught and overtook the Worcester S3 quad and had their sights set on Bristol Ariel and, though closing fast, ran out of course before they could get to them. However, they won the event, set a new course record and were at least as quick to get their hands around coffee and stickies in the club house.

In the morning there was doubt that division one would take place because of the strength of the wind - but it went ahead. The wind had dropped appreciably by the afternoon for division two, but then the rain came down in bucket fulls.

In division one Sarah Cook and Laurissa Lowe in WS2 2x did battle against the wind and a crew from the home club. They came out victorious against both with a time of 14mins 45secs - beating Stourport by 3 seconds !

Russell Thornton also did battle in division one. He competed in S3 1x against two other singles both from Stourport. He split the Stourport crews, coming in second with a time of 14mins 33secs.

In division two Russell Thornton and Sarah Cooke entered XS2 2x. While waiting 55 minutes at the start in the rain, they had to bale their boat three times. That was probably their secret weapon - keeping the boat light - because they beat a composite crew from Loughborough Uni. and Gloucester Uni. with a time of 13mins 42 secs, beating their opponents by 31 secs.

The Fours Head was first held in 1955. It has increased in size over the years and now in excess of 500 boats race in four basic categories : quadruple sculls; coxless fours and coxed fours, with levels from Juniors up to Elite.

The present day course, from Chiswick Bridge to Putney, is four and a quarter miles. It is the championship course for the University boat race between Oxford and Cambridge, but rowed in the reverse direction.

The weather was fair for this year\'s race. However rowing into the fresh breeze which created choppy water, made the latter part of the race very hard going. ( So Ben told me! )

We had four crews entered in the Fours Head on the Tideway, two senior crews, a junior crew and a women\'s junior crew.

The first senior crew was Rich Woods, Tim Barnett, Dan Braun and Ben Rodford, racing in S2 4-. Their time was 20 mins 37 secs compared with a winning time for the category of 20 mins 04 secs by an Eton College four. Our crew\'s time put them in twelfth place out of the forty four entrants. A good result.

Our second senior crew was made up of Russell Thornton, Martin Jones, Toby Venn and Jon Garner. They also raced in S2 4- and came in 27 th place with a time of 21 mins 29 secs. A very creditable performance on the Tideway.

Our women\'s junior eighteen crew had the experience of racing on the Tideway in W Jun 4x- category. Laura Springham, Josie Ashworth, Kirstie Bicknell and Kalan-Mai Waite formed the crew. They came in eighteenth of the twenty eight entrants in the category, with a time of 22 mins 54 secs compared with the winning time of 21 mins 32 secs by Henley Rowing Club. A good result and a valuable experience which will give them encouragement for the future.

Then there was our crew in Jun 4x-. The crew consisted of David Pollard, Hayden Sansum, Sam Thornton and Lyndon Cook. They produced a very quick time 20 mins 33 secs which gave them fourteenth position in the field of forty. The winning time was 19 mins 21 secs by a quad from Westminster School. Another good result achieved by this crew.

This was a good event for the club with some good performances and some valuable experince gained by the juniors.

The start of the Head race was put back to 2 pm because a large boat was to move along the canal at 11.30 am, the original start time for the Head. However the boat didn\'t appear. We had decent weather for the event. It was cloudy, chilly with a fresh breeze against the boats during the race, but the rain kept away. The course for the Head was approximately six kilometres from Castle straight to Sims bridge.

There were 34 boats taking part and fourteen of them were from Gloucester.

The quickest boat over the course was our J18 4x- of Dave Pollard, Sam Thornton, Hayden Sansum and Lyndon Cook in a time of 22min 50 sec. An excellent performance.

Our S2 4- crew of Rich Wood, Dan Braun, Tim Barnett and Ben Rodford covered the course in 23 mins 24 secs.

Our next quickest crew was Russell Thornton, Jon Garner, Toby Venn and Martin Jones in S3 4- . in a time of 24 mins 30 secs.

Next was our WJ18 4x- crew of Laura Springham, Josie Ashworth, Charlie and Kirstie Bicknell with a time of 27 mins 32 secs.

Jack Whittington, Will Gilbert, Sam Coles, Ed Jones, Tom Waters, Ayrton Peel, Chris Beukowitz and Chris coxed by Nick Waters in our S4 8+ finished with a time of 27 mins 43 secs.

Then we had another junior crew of Ali Barnard, Joe Fox, Leo Kirby, Ali Yates coxed by Tobie Bowdler in J16 4x+ finishing in a time of 27 mins 55 secs.

Two juniors Lauren Williams and Hattie Neave entered in WS4 2x and returned a time of 29 mins 02 secs.

Beth Rodford, one of our Olympic oarswomen, borrowed a single boat to join the event in WO 1x and returned a time of 29 mins 23 secs.

Steve Lowe in VetC 1x covered the course in 29 mins 46 secs.

Our WJ15 4x+ crew was Alicia Green, Hetty Watt, Lucy Cooper, Tori Brown coxed by Alice Dibley and they achieved a time of 32 mins 0 secs.

Kalan Waite in WJ18 1x finished the course in 31 mins 28 secs.

The WS4 2x crew of Laura Meadows and Beth Hamblett had a time of 33 mins 22 secs.

In WS4 4+ our crew of Ellie Cooper, Zoe Mandeville, Rachael Britnell, Jane Edmonds, coxed by Pete Hills finished in 33 mins 31 secs.

Gerry Jones in WVetC 1x had a time of 33 mins 47 secs.

The Pairs Head is held on the Thames\' Tideway. The course is 4000 metres from Chiswick to Hammersmith Bridge downstream on the ebb tide. The event was held on a good, sunny day.

Sam Thornton and James Brown entered in S4 2X category and were sixth quickest out of a field of 23 crews. Their time was 13mins 1sec compared with the quickest crew\'s time of 12mins 22secs. This good race bodes well for this young crew.

In S3 2- we had Jonathan Garner and Russell Thornton representing our club. They too put in a good performance with a time of 13mins 36secs compared with a winning time of 13mins 3secs. Their time gave them seventh place in a field of seventeen.

We had three crews entered in category S2 2-, Rich Woods and Tim Barnett; Aaron Squire and Toby Venn; Ben Rodford and Daniel Braun.

Rich and Tim put in another excellent performance taking second place in a field of twenty crews, with a time of 12mins 55secs, less than three seconds behind the winning boat. But knowing Rich and Tim I expect they will be disappointed at not getting first place.

Aaron and Toby put in a creditable performance too against the tough opposition taking seventeenth place with a time of 14mins 8secs.

Our crew of Ben and Daniel had a very good row. They were seventh in their category with a time of 13mins 23secs.

This was a good day for Gloucester Rowing Club . We were well represented at the heads and had good performances.

Our crew in Nv 4+ was Steve Mandeville, Paul Brooker, Toby Venn and John Squire coxed by Patrick Pollard (Patch). We won the semi final and then went on to take the final too. So the crew raised themselves out of novice status as this was a qualifying event.

Tim Barnett, Rhona McCallum, Katy Gallant and Ben Rodford with Patch as cox made up our crew in MxS3 4+. The crew beat Liverpool Victoria in their semi final and also took the final.

Deirdre Squire, Rhona McCallum, Kate Beswick and Becky Thomas with John Squire as their cox in WS3 4+ had a good day, winning their two heats and the semi final only losing out in the final due to a bad start.

The WS3 8+ crew was made up of Deirdre Squire, Rhona McCallum, Kate Beswick, Becky Thomas, Kim Drinkwater, Karen Longstaff, Zoe Mandeville and Rachael Britnell with Pete Hills their experinced cox. The crew successfully came through the semi final and in the final there was an exchange of words between the coxswains as the blades clashed. The umpires deemed that we had entered our opponents water and so we were disqualified !!

Deidre and Aaron squire were in category MxS3 2x but were unable to get through their heat.

Veterans and Juniors

In VetD/E 4+ our crew, consisting of John Squire, Mark Venn, Paul Brooker and James Dorer coxed by Abbie Cooper, were up against another Vet D crew from Ross who got the better of us by 3/4 length.

There were three crews in VetD 2x. Gerry and Martin Jones put in a smooth performance to beat Llandaff (Weeks) by three and a half lengths in the heat then did a repeat performance winning the final against Llandaff (Thomas) by four lengths.

Steve Lowe sculled ferociously in VetC 1x but lost out by 2 1/2 lengths to Maunsell of Bewl.

Russell Thornton was one of three crews in VetD 1x. He had a close race against Atkinson of Dart Totness in the heat and came out the winner by 1/2 length. He then competed against Phillips of Bewl Bridge in the final who he beat by one and a half lengths.

Seniors

Our crew in the MxE 4+ was Tim Barnett, Rhona MacCallum, Katy Gallant and Ben Rodford coxed by Patrick Pollard (Patch). This new crew beat a composite crew of Bristol Ariel and Bristol City by one and a quarter lengths in the semi, then went on to conquer a four from Reading University in the final by a length - quite an achievement really when Tim could only manage to get his tall frame to do half slide because of the high rate set by the stroke.

There was another success for the club in NV 4+. Our boat, crewed by Steve Mandeville, Paul Brooker, Toby Venn and John Squire coxed by Patch again, had a row over in the semi and went into the final fresh, to cross the finish line one and a half lengths ahead of the Bewdley four.

We had a boat amongst the six entrants in NV 2x but we were eliminated in the heat by Walbrook. We lost by 3/4 length.

Sam Thornton represented the club in E 1x. He did well in the heat to get the better of Plank of UK Police by just three feet. The tables were turned in the final when Mitchell of Wycliffe College crossed the line 3 ft ahead of Sam.

Dave Pollard was amongst the three entrants in S4 1x. In the semi he left Kelly of Christchurch two and a half lengths behind him at the finish. But in the final, Revechon of Cantabrigian, got the better of Dave by one and a half lengths.

Martin Jones and Steve Lowe were both entered in Nv 1x. Martin had Bristow of RAF as his opponent in the semi and beat him easily. So it was Steve and Martin in the final. Steve\'s inexperience hampered him and Martin smoothly won the final easily.

The eight members in our WS3 8+ crew were Kim Drinkwater, Zoe Mandeville, Rachael Britnell, Karen Longstaff, Rhona MacCallum, Kate Beswick, Deirdre Squire, Becky Thomas coxed by Pete Hills. They had a straight final against Llandaff and were victorious, winning by one and a quarter lengths.

Our WNV 4+ crew beat the four from Bristol Ariel easily in the semi, but I don\'t know how they fared against Cambridge in the final. ( When I know I\'ll tell you !! )

Of the three boats in WS4 2x our crew did not progress to the final, they were knocked out in the semi. Christchurch beat us by two and a half lengths.

Gerry Jones competed in Ws4 1x where she came up against Cottrill of Evesham in her heat. Cottrill got the better of Gerry crossing the line one and a half lengths ahead.

Becky Thomas entered WNV 1x but was no match for Bathe-Taylor of Avon County who won easily.

The weather was mixed - sunshine and showers. We had seven entries on the Saturday which was raced over 1100 metres downstream on the Severn.

Tim Barnett entered Nv 1x but was knocked out of the event in the heat by Barbour of Bewdley RC.

Tim was also in S4 1x and again lost out in the semi to a Stourport sculler. Tim was not at his best on the day.

In S2 1x we had two entrants Russell and Sam Thornton. In the semi Russell came second to Penny of Monmouth RC. Sam got through his semi and then he came up against Penny in the final. Sam took revenge for the Thorntons and Gloucester by beating Penny by a canvas in the final.

Russell also competed in VetD 1x. In the semi he beat Ferris of Monmouth RC and went on to win the final crossing the line ahead of Rhodes of Worcester RC.

Sam took part in J18 1x. In his heat he got the better of Bunting of Ross RC then faced Sykes of Hollingworth Lake RC in the semi. Sam left Sykes a length behind him as he crossed the finish line. He then took the final in even more convincing style beating Smith of Hollingworth Lake RC by three and a half lengths. Sam in developing a habit of leaving opponents in his wake. Well done Sam.

Sunday 10 August 2008

The sprint was over a 600 metres course upstream.

Aaron and Deirdre Squire in MxS2 2x lost their heat by a length to a Hereford double.

In S3 1x Aaron Squire beat Williams of Trent RC by 3/4 length in the heat but came second to Sanchez of Quintin RC in the semi.

Deirdre Squire had Barker of Trent RC as her opponent in WS4 1x. Barker was just 3/4 length too good for Deirdre.

We had Toby Venn and Steve Mandeville competing in S4 2-. In the semi they easily beat a pair from Ross and went on to win the final too against a pair from Stratford. Well done Toby and Steve.

Our four in Nv 4+ was John Squire; Paul Brooker; Toby Venn; Steve Mandeville coxed by Abbie. They got through the heat against Burton Leander but lost to Worcester A in the semi.

Our WS4 4+ crew of Kim Drinkwater; Zoe Mandeville; Karen Longstaff; Rachael Britnell coxed by Pete Hills had something to prove, having previously lost to our B crew at Bewdley. (Though the B crew were not entered today.) They showed they meant business by fighting hard to take the heat against Hollingworth Lake RC by a canvas. Their next opponents in the semi were a four from Monmouth RC. They had to fight even harder in this. Approaching the finish our crew were half a length down but with determination and grit they drew level and crossed the line a foot ahead. After the first two races the final turned out to be a bit of a dawdle. Our ladies crossed the finish line two and a half lengths ahead of the Stourport four to win the event. Our ladies four had proved they are made of the right stuff. Very well done !

Abbie and Ellie entered WNv 2x. They were beaten by a Bradford crew who went on to win the final.

Our eight in WS4 8+ was made up of Kate Beswick; Zoe Mandeville; Kim Drinkwater; Karen Longstaff; Rachael Britnell; Becky Thomas; Ellie and Abbie coxed by Pete Hills. It was a straight final against a Monmouth eight and our crew won the event convincingly by one and a half lengths.

It was a successful regatta for Gloucester. We came away the winners of seven events. Congratulations to everybody.

Aaron and Luke Squire joined Dan Grant and Sam Churchill from Hallum in Sheffield to form a composite crew in category S4 4X-. However they were moved up to S3 4X- and had a straight final against a quad from Bristol Ariel RC who got the better of the composite crew.

Aaron and Luke Squire were paired in S2 2-. They did not recover from a poor start and the Reading University pair won the heat.

Nathan Davey in J14 1X had a bye in the first round but lost to Evesham RC A crew in the semi final.

Sunday 27 July 2008

Our crew in the WS4 8+ was Deirdre Squire, Rhona MacCallum, Kate Beswick, Becky Thomas, Kim Drinkwater, Zoe Mandeville, Karen Longstaff and Rachael Britnell coxed by Pete Hills. It was a straight final against the home eight - Bewdley. Our crew went well from the start and, in the words of the official commentator, \"outclassed the opposition\" to win by two and a half lengths. A fine win for our women\'s eight.

In WS4 4+ our B crew of Deirdre Squire, Rhona MacCallum, Kate Beswick and Becky Thomas coxed by John Squire had an interesting first race. The steering broke on the boat of their opponents - Stourport. With the result that Stourport went over three blades of our boat but undeterred we rowed on to take the heat.

Our A crew in WS4 4+ made up of Kim Drinkwater, Zoe Mandeville, Karen Longstaff and Rachael Britnell coxed by Pete Hills met a four from Trafford RC in their heat. It was a hard fought race which our crew won.

Then our A and B fours met each other in the semifinal. Everything clicked together for the B crew and to everyone\'s surprise beat the A crew by one and a half lengths.
The B crew then went on to face Derby in the final and again came home victorious, winning by two and a half lengths this time. A wonderful outing for our new WS4 4+ crew.

The composite crew of Aaron and Luke Squire, Dan Grant and Sam Churchill were moved up two categories from S4 4x to S2 4x. They faced a Bridgenorth double in a straight final in which our crew raced well and lost by just three quarters of a length.

John and Luke Squire had an outing in Nv 2-. They raced against a Minerva Bath pair who got the better of John and Luke.

National Championships

!8th - 20th July 2008

Dave Pollard (Gloucester Rowing Club/Cleeve School) teamed up with Ben Joakim (Christchurch Rowing Club) to win a bronze medal in the J16 pairs competition at this years National Rowing Championships at Nottingham. David\'s usual partner, Steve Williams of Gloucester was injured in a bike accident in June and so David paired up with the Christchurch rower. After a few weeks of training together they entered the trials for the GB vs France J16 match, but lack of race experience and nerves led to a disappointing row, finishing 6th overall and 15 seconds behind the Evesham pair that were selected. Determined to show what they were capable of, the boys trained hard up to the National Championships and made a steady start in the final At the halfway mark the boys were 12 seconds behind Evesham who led the race. Moving smoothly past crews from Tees and Newark the boys started to make up ground on the leaders, who were being pushed hard by the Scottish pair from George Watsons College. With the gap closing rapidly and a bronze medal guaranteed the gap between Gloucester/Christchurch and Evesham was reduced to just 3 seconds on the finish line, with the Scots taking the Gold medal just ahead.

The regatta course was 650 metres downstream in a strong current finishing short of the weir on the river Taff in Cardiff. One boat - not ours- didn\'t turn quickly enough unfortunately, and went over the weir. Our club had entrants in five of the categories.

The established crew of Kim Drinkwater, Zoe Mandeville, Karen Longstaff and Rachael Brittnell with Pete Hills as cox, were in WS4 4+. Our crew beat Ross by two lengths in a straight final to win the event.

In NV4+ our crew was Steve Mandeville, Toby Venn, Paul Brooker and John Squire coxed by Abbie. We beat Llandaff in the first heat but lost out to Ironbridge in the semi final.

Steve Mandeville, Paul Brooker, John Squire and James Dorer with Abbie again as cox formed our crew in VetD 4+. We faced Monmouth in the semi final. It was a close race but we were beaten to the line.

Our WS4 8+ crew were move up a category to WS3 8+. Our eight was Kim, Zoe, Karen, Rachael, Jane, Rhona, Kate and Katy coxed by Pete. We went straight into the semi final which we lost by two lengths to Bristol Ariel.

Toby Venn and Steve Mandeville formed our pair in S3 2-. We went straight into the final against Llandaff, and won the event.

The Henley Vets is run over 1000 metres course upstream from Temple Island to Upper Thames Rowing Club. The weather conditions were good but there was a head wind.

In VetC 4+ we had our established crew of Chris Richardson, Martin Jones, Russell Thornton and Jonathan Garner. There were eight entrants in the event and our crew came up against Barwon of Australia in their first heat. The Australians got the better of our four, winning by one length, and went on to win the event.

Jonathan Garner and Russell Thornton were in VetC 2-. They had a bye in the first round then had Wallingford as their opponents in the second round. Our crew were beaten by Wallingford who went on to win the category.

Russell Thornton was entered in VetD 1X but had a disappointing event. Russell was late but within 100 yards of the start when the zealous official let his opponent start.

Martin and Gerry Jones were in the MxVetD 2X event. There were three entrants and Martin and Gerry went straight in to the final against Norwich who won the event by two lengths.

Gloucester Rowing Club junior squad had a successful trip to compete at the Stratford upon Avon Regatta , where racing is held on a 750m course on a scenic stretch of river behind the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
The WJ16 4+ (Josie Ashworth, Laura Springham, Leanne Phillips, Kirstie Bicknell and cox Ed Jones) have had a frustrating season. Selected to represent Wiltshire, Avon Gloucestershire and Wales in WJ16 VIIIs at the Junior Inter Regional regatta, their race was cancelled due to high winds. Dropping into a IV for the National Schools regatta the crew were one of Gloucesters\' best hopes for a top results but once again high winds meant no race. With summer holidays looming Stratford was their only chance for a race, so they went out determined to win. Racing the Stratford \'B\' crew in the first round the girls drew steadily away to win by a length and a half. Facing the home crew, Stratford \'A\' in the final the Gloucester girls came into the home straight almost level and had to turn on the power in the final sprint to pull away and win by a third of a length. The photo shows the victorious crew with the Annie Davis Challenge Vase, which was first presented in 1874. Clockwise from top left Laura Springham, Kirstie Bicknell, Leanne Phillips, Josie Ashworth, Ed Jones, with the event sponsors.
Neil Vines and Ben Marshall have been struggling to find their form in the J15 doubles this season, but a good win over long time rivals Llandaff saw them into the final of their event. They recorded a comfortable win over the Evesham crew in the final and will hopefully take this success on to the National Championships in July.
Another crew looking to race at the Nationals is the newly formed WJ14 double of Lauren Williams and Hattie Neave. In her first year of rowing Lauren is proving to be a formidable competitor and the double were out to make a point in their first race together. They did this with easy victories over Leicester and Stratford and are now training hard for the Championships at Nottingham. In the J18 doubles Sam Thornton and Lyndon Cook were never troubled by their opponents from Evesham and the King Edward VI School and added another tankard to their collection of trophies.
Special mention must go to the WJ14 quad of Alicia Green, Beth Hamblett, Lauren Williams, Charlie Allen and Jess Sharples Facing a crew from Leicester who had finished 5th at the National schools regatta the crew raced hard and came into the final straight slightly down. A determined push saw them draw level on the finish line to record the only dead heat of the day. Unfortunately a collision on the way back to the start for the re-row left Lauren with a bruised arm which reduced her effectiveness and the crew lost the rerowed race by a length.
Nathan Devaux-Davies was the sole Gloucester Junior at Ironbridge Regatta. However he represented the club well with two \'easy\' wins in the J14 singles event.

Marlow Regatta took place on the lake at Dorney.

Our S2 4- crew of Rich Wood, Graeme Hill, Tim Barnett and Ben Rodford were hoping to do well after their win at the Metropolitan. There were fourteen entries in the category and they had a head wind to contend with. Our crew began well and won their heat to get to the final. Ben received some words of encouragement on his mobile just before the final, from Katherine Grainger, an Olympic quad oarswoman who was at Marlow, - \"No pressure on you but just kill the opposition.\"
They got off to a good start and were leading the race then a London four worked their way through the field and came up to our crew with 500 metres to go. Our four put in their practiced finish and just held off the London four to win by 0.19 seconds - about 3 feet. It was a really hard race and they felt that they had earned the plaque they were awarded for winning the \"Juniors Seniors - Fours Challenge Cup\".

Another very good, morale boosting win for the crew. Dierdre rewarded them with a bottle of wine. Henley is next. If they could bag that one, Deirdre says it\'s worth a bottle of the best bubbly

The regatta took place on Dorney Lake.

Our crew in the S3 4+ category was Jonathan Garner, Martin Jones, Russell Thornton and Chris Richardson. There were nineteen boats in the event so there was plenty of opposition. We were in the first heat, consisting of seven crews, and came home third in a time of 7 mins 56 secs. Since only the first two boats go through to the final our crew went into the repechage with five others. Our crew did very well to win this race in a time of 7 mins 5 secs to join the other six crews in the final. We came sixth in the final in a time of 7 mins 12 secs, beating a crew from Guildford RC. This was a very good performance by our crew against a lot of good opposition.

Our S2 2- crew of Ben Rodford, Graeme Hill, Richard Wood and Tim Barnett were hoping to do well in the event, having disappointingly just been beaten to first place in the two previous outings. But there was plenty of good opposition in the other eighteen boats in the category. We started well and won the heat pulling ahead of Star, their nearest rival. In the final our crew had a good start and was in the lead. Nearing the finish the other crews put in the effort to catch up, Star again being closest behind, but with our crew\'s final push they held off the challenge to win comfortably by a length.

Steve, Toby , Kevin & Paul entered NV 4+ and came up against a four from Bideford in their heat. Our four did well and won the race. They then competed against a crew from De Montford University who were just too good for our four, and we lost the semifinal.

John Squire entered VET E novice 1X and lost out to a boat from Bradford on Avon, the only other crew in that event.

Our WS4 4+ crew of Kim Drinkwater, Karen Longstaff, Zoe Mandeville and Rachael Britnell had an outing. They met a crew from Hereford RC in their heat. Although our crew rowed hard Hereford took the race.

Deidre Squire and Gerry Jones formed a double in WS4 2X. They had a bye in the first heat then in the semifinal faced a Bristol Ariel RC crew. The race was close and hard fought. At the finish Bristol were just half a length in the lead.

Wallingford Regatta takes place in the six lane, 2000 metre course on the impressive Dorney Lake at Eton - site of the Olympic rowing.

There were two Gloucester crews in the S2 2- category. Russell Thornton and Jonathan Garner paired in one boat and Martin Jones and Chris Richardson in the other. In heat A, Russell and Jonathan achieved a time of 7m 59s and came in fifth, compared with the heat winning time of 7m 39s. Martin and Chris had a time of 7m 56s in their heat to come in fourth, against a heat winning time of 7m 37s. Since the first three in each heat go through to the final, neither of our crews made it. Nevertheless - creditable performances from both crews. It is tough at Wallingford !

In category S2 4- Gloucester again had two crews. Russell Thornton, Jonathan Garner, Martin Jones and Chris Richardson crewed one boat. The second was crewed by Ben Rodford, Tim Barnett, Graeme Hill and Rich Wood. I don’t know what happened to Russell’s crew. They came in sixth in their heat and no finish time was taken. Not an encouraging day for the crew. Ben’s crew came second in their heat. They were just one second behind the Star and Arrow crew who won in 6m 31s. So our crew went into the final against five other crews, including Star and Arrow again. Our crew gave it every thing they had but lost out by just one second again to Star and Arrow whose time in the final was 6m 41s. In spite of the fact it was an excellent performance by our crew no doubt they were disappointed, because last year in this event they lost by a canvas to a Marlow four

Ben Rodford was the only crew from Gloucester Rowing Club in the Scullers Head. There were 540 single scullers taking part in the event which took place over a 6850 metres course on the Tideway between Mortlake and Putney. Although there were a large number of boats, Ben said the event ran smoothly, thanks largely to the experience of the crews taking part.

In his category of S3 1X lightweight, Ben did well to be fourth out of 20, amongst these experienced scullers. Overall Ben was 61st out of the 540 boats with a time of 22m 25s.

The race was held over a 2500 metres course on the canal from Parkend bridge to Wycliffe boathouse, on a chilling, windy and often wet day, that made it an unpleasant wait at the start for the crews. The boats faced the brisk head wind on the course so it was a hard race.

We had three senior crews in the first division. In S3 4+ our crew of Chris Richardson, Martin Jones, Russell Thornton, Jonathan Garner coxed by Rosie Jones came in third of six entrants with a time of 9m 37s, the winning time being 9m 24s. Our WS4 2X crew of Deirdre Squire and Gerry Jones had a time of 12m 32s which was slower the other four boats in the category. Tim Barnett’s improvement in his sculling technique enabled him to win S4 1X in a time of 10m 54s.

In division two there were three of our senior crews racing. The wrinklies crew of Mark Venn, James Stuart, Paul Brooker and John Squire with Dierdre Squire coxing, in the S4 4+ category, had a time of 10m 34s giving them third place out of four entrants. Russell Thornton had his second race of the day sculling in S2 1X and did very well to win in a time of 10m 59s. In the WS4 4+ category our crew was Kim Drinkwater, Karen Longstaff, Carrie Mortinger and Jane coxed by Ellie. They came second in a time of 11m 49s, to the only other crew in this event.

There was just one of our senior crews in division three. Russell Thornton in his third race of the day was partnered this time by Jonathan Garner in S2 2-. The pair did very well to win the event in a time of 10m 34s which gave Russell his second win of the day.

Sunday 11th November 2007

Thirty three of our Juniors travelled to Pangbourne College for the Junior Sculls Head race. The course is 3000m on the River Thames. The event is attended by Club crews as well as the top rowing schools.

J16 double scullers Dave Pollard and Steve Williams, unbeaten in their last four events, were looking for another good result at Pangbourne. Steve had only managed one light outing the previous weekend following a four week absence due to a rugby injury. The double set off steadily but soon hit their stride and quickly overtook the Bryanston School A crew that had started ahead. With the whole field now in sight they sculled efficiently down the course to record a seven second win over second placed Wallingford and third placed St Edwards School.

There was controversy in the J15 doubles, where Neil Vines and Ben Marshall have been one of the top crews in the country for the last couple of years. After a strong row where they overtook several crews and caught up with the leaders the duo were awarded a NRO (Not Rowed Out) result, as the timekeepers had failed to record them crossing the finish line. After some investigation the results could not be confirmed and the safe estimate left the Gloucester crew in joint first place with Dulwich College. This was disappointing for the boys as they had caught up with Dulwich (who had started ahead) and were overlapping them on the finish line.

Ben Marshall also took an excellent second place in the field of thirty one J15 single scullers, just behind the winner from Kings School Canterbury. Other good results in the singles were achieved by Sam Thornton who was 9th out of 23 J17 scullers and Dave Pollard who finished 6th in the J16 event ahead of 27 other competitors.

Long standing double partners Josie Ashworth and Laura Springham took a close second place behind their rivals from Wallingford but have significantly closed the gap on the Oxfordshire crew since they last raced.

TheWJ15 quad of Lucy Wise, Tasha Cook, Amy Voysey and Becca Coates coxed by Patrick Pollard had a good row to finish third in their event and were pleased to beat local rivals from Haberdashers School, Monmouth as well as some good London based crews.

With eleven crews in the WJ14 quad sculls, the new Gloucester line up of Hattie Neave, Laura Meadows, Beth Hamblett and Jess Rayer coxed by Nick Waters were out to make their mark. In the early stages of the race they eased past local rivals Evesham and were disappointed with their fourth place overall result. However, only four seconds separated the 2nd to 4th positions so or crew will be eagerly anticipating their next race against the Avon County and Molesey crews.

Twenty five crews from the Club Junior squad travelled to the Stourport and Monmouth Head of the River races and returned with 11 wins. The crews contained a mix of experienced Juniors and newcomers who have only started rowing this year.

Stourport Head is raced over a 2500m downstream course. Neil Vines, who won a silver medal at the 2007 National Championships in the double sculls, raced in the J15 singles event and stormed home as a clear winner, beating some of the J18 scullers as well as his own age group. The J18 double scullers (Richard Sansum, Lyndon Cook) comfortably won their event. In the J16 age group, the new partnership of David Pollard and Steve Williams had little trouble adding a third successive win to their record, also setting a faster time than all the J18 crews. Nick Waters and Tobie Bowdler proved their strength in the J14 event cruising home ahead of a crew from the home club Stourport.

On the Sunday, on a slightly shorter course of 2300m the crews had the advantage of a slight stream but faced a strong headwind for the last 800m of the race. In the first division the J18 and J16 coxless quads were both racing. The J18 crew (Richard Sansum, Lyndon Cook, James Brown, Sam Thornton) finished second to a crew from Llandaff, but the J16s (David Pollard, Steve Williams, Hayden Sansum, Neil Vines) flew down the course, overtaking the Kings School Worcester ‘A’ crew after 1000m and pulling away from the Kings School Worcester ‘B’ crew to win by over 40 seconds in a very fast time.

In the second division the WJ15 coxed quad (Lucy Wise, Natasha Cook, Leanne Phillips, Becca Coates, Patrick Pollard) were fresh from their first win over a fast Ross crew at Worcester Regatta. They set off ahead of Ross and both the crews moved rapidly away from the rest of the field. The gap opened and closed as the crews raced down, but the Gloucester girls managed to hold the power on at the end of the race to win by two seconds. Hayden Sansum teamed up with Jack Whittington in the J16 doubles to race 4 other crews from Monmouth and Kings School Worcester. Putting in a determined row they eased away from the other crews to take the gold. The Men’s Novice 4 (Andy Sweet, Will Gilbert, Sam Coles, Tom Chew, Laura Springham) is a developing crew with Andy in his only third month of rowing. Despite their lack of racing experience they rowed very well to win the event and credit goes to Laura for getting the best out of the crew – to quote Andy “She was so scary we did not dare to let up!”

The final division saw another comfortable win for Bowdler and Waters in the J14 double sculls, overtaking their opposition from Monmouth in the early stages of the race. In the WJ16 double sculls the long standing partnership of Josie Ashworth and Laura Springham, who have twice represented the region at the inter-regional championships, won their race, finishing nine seconds ahead of the second placed Gloucester crew (Leigh Bowdler, Kirstie Bicknell) with both these crews well ahead of the other four crews in the event. In the largest event of the day, the J16 single sculls, double partners Pollard and Williams had their own personal race inside the main event. In the end Pollard’s experience paid off and he finished 9 seconds ahead of Williams, with these two taking first and second places overall in a field of nine scullers. Special mention must also go to Hattie Neave who raced her first singles event into the headwind, finishing in second place just 8 seconds behind a very good sculler from Ross Rowing Club.
