Mark Gloucester Rowing Club in conjunction with Ribston school will be running a series of sessions to allow Year 7 and older children to try the sport of rowing. The Gloucester Junior squad started in 1995 and was one of the first club based squads. In the last nine years squad members have won many national titles, they were the first club crew to win an VIIIs event at the National Schools Championship and have gone on to represent Great Britain at World Junior, U23 and Senior Championships and at the Olympics. Children are introduced to the basic skills on rowing machines at the club or their schools during Dry Start. They then move down to the boathouse for Wet Start to use and further develop their skills on the water. Each of these two stages will conclude with a fun based competitions, the first on the rowing machines and the second on the water. The final introductory stage will take the form of a 5 day rowing camp at the end of August to improve skills and put together crews to race at the Gloucester regatta. At this stage those who want to continue with the sport will move into the main Gloucester Junior squad and continue to train regularly. Anyone wishing to progress to Wet Start must complete a swim test (100m in T-shirt and shorts) and a capsize drill in a swimming pool. This will be on the afternoon of Sunday 26th April at Sir Thomas Rich's School pool.Ribston pupils will attend Dry Start at their school. Dates will be announced soon.
