Project Oarsome Gloucester Rowing Club in conjunction with Ribston and Brockworth schools will be running a series of sessions to allow Year 7 children to try the sport of rowing. The Gloucester Junior squad started in 1995 and was one of the first club based squads. In the last nine years squad members have won many national titles, they were the first club crew to win an VIIIs event at the National Schools Championship and have had 3 members representing Great Britain at the Junior World Championships, two returning with medals. Year 7 children are introduced to the basic skills on rowing machines at the club or their schools. They then move down to the boathouse to use and further develop their skills on the water. Each of these two stages will conclude with a fun based competitions, the first on the rowing machines and the second on the water. The final introductory stage will take the form of a 5 day rowing camp at the end of August to improve skills and put together crews to race at the Gloucester regatta. At this stage those who want to continue with the sport will move into the main Gloucester Junior squad and continue to train regularly.
While the indoor sessions are open to all comers, we will have to restrict the water sessions to 30 children. If selection is necessary it will be based on participation at the indoor sessions so attendance at as many sessions as possible is advised. All activities are run by qualified, volunteer coaches and in full accordance with Amateur Rowing Association (ARA) and club safety policies. Those progressing to the Wet Start portion must attend the capsize drill before they can go on the water
Then, if your child would like to join the Gloucester Rowing Club Junior Squad, the annual club membership is £120 and the ARA racing licence costs £11 per year. Additionally, race entries generally cost about £7. For further information, do call us on 01242 680057 or click on the link below to send an email
