Bell Boats
Sunday 7th June 2009
It was the second time Bell Boat races have been held at the club. Juniors under eleven raced in the first session from 10pm to 12 noon. Then 11 to 18 year olds from 12 to 2pm and the seniors from 2pm to 4pm. The weather was kind with just cloud and some sunshine until the final at the end of the day when it just poured down.
Youngsters from Tirlebrook Primary and Robinswood Primary made up the three teams in the first session- Titans from Tirlebrook ; Robins of Robinswood and the Put Togethers made up from the two schools. In the first race the Robins beat the Titans by one and a half lengths due mainly to the Titans running into the bank at one point. The Titans showed their potential in the second race easily beating Put Together by five lengths. In the third race Robins also got the bettter of Put Together but by only half a length.
A draw decided the entrants for the last two races of the session. Put Together drew a bye into the final while Robins and Titan had to battle together in the semi. With improved techniques by now both teams in the semi paddled well with Titans winning by one and a half lengths in a good race. The final too between Titans and Put Together was a good race. Titans again proved their class and won by one and a half lengths
.
Each member of the winning crew received a medal and all crew members had a bar of chocolate.
There were seven teams in the second session for the 11 to 18 year olds. They were Crossdressers; Inbetweeners; Blue Team; No 1 Team; Gladiators; Innsworth Scouts and Team Unknown. The first race was close. Inbetweeners beat Crossdressers by 3 feet. In the second race Blue Team beat No. 1 Team easily. The third race produced a win for Innsworth Scouts over Gladiators. Team Unknown had a bye to the next round. In the first semi final Blue Team beat Inbetweeners by three lengths. The other semi produced the closest race of the day, Team Unknnown beat Innsworth Scouts by just one foot.
To give the teams that lost in the first round another race, Crossdressers paddled against Gladiators and Crossdressers won by a length. Then Crossdressers competed with No. 1 Team with Crossdressers again coming out winners by two lengths. The final to decide the winners of the session then took place between Blue Team and Team Unkown. Blue Team came out clear winners to take the title for the session.
The adult's session had five teams ; 8 Plebs in a Boat; Team Shuttleworth; 46ers; Gloucester County Council and Rachael's Rowers.
The first race was won by 8 Plebs in a Boat who beat Team Shuttleworth by 3 lengths. Team Shuttleworth then had another race against Rachael's Rowers, who also beat them, but only by 2 feet. In the third race Gllucester County Council beat 46ers easily. 46ers second race was against Team Shuttleworth who beat them easily. The first semi final was between 8 Plebs in a Boat and Gloucester County Council who were beaten by 3 lengths. The other semi between Rachael's Rowers and Team Shuttleworth was won by Rachael's Rowers by 3 feet. The final, raced in a downpour, was between 8 Plebs in a Boat and Rachael's Rowers. 8 Plebs in a Boat came out champions of the session by 2 lengths
The day's event ran smoothly thanks to all the club helpers. The teams obviously enjoyed the races and the clubs coffers were enriched by the entry and refreshments money. Another successful Bell Boats event buiding on the first one held in 2008.
