Bristol Avon Regatta at Saltford
Saturday 16th May 2009
The club entered twenty crews at Saltford. The Bristol Avon regatta returned to Saltford from Bristol docks in 2008. It is held on a 1000 metres straight on the river.
The regular crew of Rachael Britnell, Karen Longstaff, Zoe Mandeville and Karen Drinkwater with Peter Hills their ususal cox entered W.IM3.4+. In the semi final they beat a four from Monkton Combe School by half a length then in the final Plymouth beat them by four lengths.
Gerry Jones had a good day in the W.VetD.1x event. She beat an Avon Cunty sculler easily.
Gerry combined with Deirdre Squire in W.IM3.2x but they could not get the better of a women's double from Christchurch who beat them by two lengths.
Deirdre and Aaron Squire raced as a double in Mx.Sen.2x but lost out to a Cotswold double by two and a half lengths.
Sarah Mashiter represented Gloucester in W.J14.1x but could not match her Avon County opponent who won easily.
Our W.J14.4x+ crew of Lucy Cooper, Cloe Jones, Hannah Locke and Jessica Westerby coxed by Hetty Watt also were beaten by a crew from Avon County.
Tobie Bowdler and Nocholas Waters in J15.2x came second to a Wycliffe College crew in the Quarter finals.
In J16.1x a Wycliffe College sculler beat our Thomas Waters by four lengths.
In a straight final Timothy Nichols in J15.1x was bettered by a Plymouth Sculler.
Returning to the seniors, John Squire and James Dorer in VetE.2- were second best to a pair from Avon County.
We had two entries in event VetD.2- Johnathan Garner rowing with Russell Thornton and Martin Jones rowing with Andy Jones. Johnathan and Russel were up against a pair from Minerva Bath in the semi final and Gloucester won by two feet. Then our two crews competed against each other in the final when Martin and Andy came out victors by three lengths.
Steve Lowe entered a sculling event again, VetC.1x. He had a good race but was two lengths behind the Hollowel Scullers boat at the finish line.
David Pollard and Sam Thornton brought some glory to Gloucester in the J18.2x event. In the semi final they easily beat a double from Plymouth then showed a Wycliffe College double the way to the finish line beating them by two lengths.
David and Sam were joined by Mike Lacey and Toby Venn and cox Rosie Jones in IM3.4+ to compete in a semi final against a Bristol Ariel four. This was not to be another victory for Gloucester but it was close, just a third of a length in it at the line.
The established Gloucester four of Jonathan Garner, Andy Jones, Martin Jones and Russell Thornton in Sen.4- competed with a Monkton Combe School crew who lead Gloucester by five lengths at the finish.
We had a crew in Nov.4+ which consisted of Jonothan Phipps, John Denne, Lee Godsell and Tim Cooper coxed by Sue Berry. They came out second best to a four from Monkton Combe School by three and a half lengths.
In his second sculling event of the day Steve Lowe entered IM3.1x and met a Bath University sculler in the semi final. Steve was beaten by the Bath boat which went on to win the final.
Paul Brooker, Mark Venn, Toby Venn and Mike Lacey coxed by Rosie Jones had a good battle with a crew from Minerva Bath in the straight final of event IM2.4+. At the finish line our crew were just a canvas behind Bath.
But we had revenge against Bath University in event W.Sen.2x. We were represented by Larissa Lowe and Kalan Mai Waite. Again it was a good race but Gloucester crossed the finish a length ahead of Bath.
