Learning to Row

Whether you are young or old, we have coaching sessions which will get you rowing so that as your technique and fitness develops, you can then join one or other of the squads and take part in their sessions.

Beginner sessions take place on 12:30 on Sundays (but this will vary from time to time). The aim is to teach the basics of sculling (rowing with 2 oars) and sweep-oar (rowing with 1 oar) and courses usually last for 12 sessions, if you are interested, click on the link to the beginners coordinator . The cost is £75 or £50 if you are in full time education.

If you are interested and over 18 years old, click on the info email link, above, and you will be contacted and welcomed to the club. For those less than 18 years, click on the following link to send an email to the Juniors Squad coaches

Many clubs and other rowing sites have good introductory guides to rowing which explain the parts of the boat, the cries used and so on. Here are a few:

Bedford Grammer School: Idiots' Guide to Rowing Quite detailed and contains some diagrams and photos to clarify things
World Rowing Championships Pages The main point of the site is, of course to publicise the World Championship, but this page gives some good background and a glossary of terms.
Concept 2 Website There's a mass of information not only about their rowing machines, but also about training in general.

Never too old too learn
