Junior's squad

Gloucester Rowing Club has always had a strong Junior section whose members come from many of the schools within Gloucestershire and further afield. Whether you are wanting to start rowing or have already got some experience, there is a lively and enthusiastic group ready to welcome you along with a capable and experienced coaching team.

Junior beginners start rowing each year at Easter, in order to take best advantage of the months with the best weather. In 2018 we are trialling a new approach to introducing younger beginners to rowing, where instead of taking a whole term to gradually introduce people to rowing, we take them through a 5 day "camp" in one week, during which they will do a capsize drill, and a whole range of land and water based sessions. By the end of the week they should all be confident on the water, and be fully prepared for moving direct to a regular (once a week) training session to lead them towards potentially competing in the future. Our first camp is for year 7 and 8 juniors, and is taking place during the Easter holiday. The second will be for year 9 and 10 juniors, and will take place over the summer half term holiday. We hope to run a third camp in the summer holidays. Each of these camps will be limited to approximately 16 places.

For older beginners - years 11, 12 and 13 - we will be providing a once a week session, which will combine some land based skills and time on the water. This will be limited to a small group - the exact size will depend on the availability of coaches.

Places for the Easter 2018 intake are now full, however if you are interested in learning to row do please contact the junior coordinator: junior.coordinator@gloucester-rowing.org so that you can be added to the waiting list for later courses.

Experienced rowers can usually start at any time of year, so long as there is space available in the squad, however at the moment we are very short of space and so cannot promise to find room for everybody, so please use the contact address above to get in touch.
